Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from you all on the internet.
Today's question is:
Tim walks through the refinishing process beginning with the arrival day, when the crew brings in equipment and immediately starts dust control by plastic-ing off areas not being worked in. Depending on the prep scope, they may pull base trim or perform floor repairs before sanding. The day involves loud, grinding machinery, and while homeowners can stay, they should expect significant noise. Crack-filling may also happen that first day, and the filler gives off a smell Tim compares to model glue, so he recommends homeowners and pets be away during that time. Staining customers then pick colors; otherwise the agreed finish goes down. Importantly, Tim hooks all his equipment to vacuums, keeping dust extremely minimal. Between the first and last day are coat days. On the final day, the crew does a thorough cleanup, removes all plastic and equipment, and leaves the home looking like they were never there, sometimes cleaner than they found it.
On refinishing day we show up and bring in equipment. The first thing we do is start dust control, plastic-ing off any areas we're not working in. Depending on the prep work, we may be pulling base that day or doing some repairs in the floor prior to sanding. Then there's loud machinery and a lot of grinding. They can be home if they want, but they're going to deal with a lot of noise. Depending on the size of the job, we may fill the cracks that day, but the filler kicks off a smell I'd relate to model glue, so if they can be gone for that, and their animals too, that would be great. After that they're picking colors if staining, and if not we put down whatever finish we agreed upon. I hook all my equipment to vacuums, so dust is very minimal. The day we leave, we do a good thorough cleanup where we worked, pull all our plastic, and make sure everything we brought in is out. It'll be like you have a new floor and like we were never there, sometimes cleaner than when we got there.
